Can realserver be in different subnet against directorserver?

I just forgot to say that my directorserver's kernel is 2.6.8 and my realservers' kernel are 2.4.27.
I use debian(sarge) as OS on all of them.
The messages of my dmesg and kernel-config file are the realservers'.
