On my distros, yes - if you installed from source then you'll need to
note where the library files are installed and either amend your
environment accordingly or tell the configure script where to look.

If they installed into /usr/local/lib then you may need to tell
configure the following:

./configure --libdir=/usr/local/lib

or wherever they ended up.
